Ans: Every four minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and it accounts for 14% of cancers.

Q. 2 Is it on the rise in urban or rural areas?

Ans: According to WHO, urbanization is associated with an increasing incidence. It is more (1 in 22) for urban women.

Q. 3 What are the early symptoms?

Ans: Lump in the breast/under arms, swelling around the breast, dimpling in the breast, itching around the nipple, flaky skin or unusual redness, pain in nipples.

Q. 4 Who is more at risk?

Ans: Genetics, 30-50 age-group, menstrual history- early onset of periods late onset of menopause, dense breast, family history.

Q. 5 Can early diagnosis help? What are the screening methods?

Ans: Yes. Breast cancer screening should ideally be done once a year, to detect anomalies early and start treatment. Methods include Self-Breast Examination, Clinical breast exam. Mammogram, MRI Breast.

Q. 6 How can one lower the risk?

Ans: Exercise regularly, maintain optimum body weight, reduce alcohol intake and stop smoking.

Ans: From Stage I to IV. Small Size Breast Lump is Stage I. In Stage II, Breast Lump Increases while Stage III Involves the armpit areas of the same side also. In Stage IV, it spreads to involve other organs like Lung, Liver, Bone, etc.

Q. 8 What treatment options are available?

Ans: Treatments have two main goals- destroy as much of the cancer as possible, and prevent tumors from returning.

Here are the some treatment options include:

Surgery: Mastectomy, which removes the whole breast, and a lumpectomy that removes only the tumor and the tissues around it (stage I to III)

Radiation Therapy: Use of targeted energy like X rays to kill cancer cells. If the breast tumor is large or not easily removed by surgery, radiation therapy before surgery may help (stage II to III, or stage IV)

Chemotherapy: Delivers anticancer drugs throughout the body to kill cancer cells (stage I to IV)

Hormone Therapy: Uses drugs to prevent hormone from falling the growth of cancer cells (stage I to IV)

Targeted Therapy: Targets the specific receptor the main driver of the breast cancer (stage I to IV)
