What are the early symptoms of Breast Cancer in 2022?

Breast cancer is a disease that affects mostly women. It begins when cells in the breast change, and it usually starts in the cells that have a layer of fat beneath them. Cancer cells can grow and spread to other parts of the body, but some breast cancers never spread.

In simple words, it is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both breasts. Although many cases are discovered at an early stage, breast cancers may also grow slowly and not cause any symptoms. If not detected and treated early enough, breast cancers may lead to death.

A person needs to be sure about the changes happening in their body to approach the oncologist. Let’s discuss about the early signs and symptoms in detail!

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is more common in women than in men. It can affect any woman at any age, but the risk increases with age.

Symptoms of breast cancer include

  • A lump or mass in the breast or underarm area.
  • Swelling or dimpling of the skin on or near the breast
  • Nipple discharge that does not look like typical breast milk
  • Inverted nipple (when it turns inward instead of pointing outward)
  • Your body may experience changes in areas such as breast size and shape after a pregnancy.
  • Veins are visible on the surface of your breast.
  • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
  • There is a sore or rash on the nipple.
  • Swelling, redness, or darkening of the breast
  • Unexplained pain or tenderness in one area of the breast or underarm, typically only one side at a time, lasting several weeks to months. The pain is often worse before periods and during sexual activity.

Risk factors for developing breast cancer include:

There are several risk factors for developing breast cancer. Some of these are age, genetics, lifestyle habits, exposure to radiation or chemicals, weight, and family history.

  • Age is one of the most significant risk factors for developing breast cancer. Women who are over 40 have a higher chance of developing breast cancer than women who are under 40. As women age, their hormone levels change, which can affect how their breasts grow.
  • Women with a family history of breast cancer may be more likely to develop the disease themselves. A woman’s genetics also play an important role in her risk factor for developing breast cancer. This means that if there is a history of breast cancer in her immediate family, she may be at higher risk of developing it herself.
  • Some lifestyle habits may increase the chances that a woman will develop breast cancer. Thus, they need to be sure of the things and activities that they are engaging in throughout their entire life. In particular, women especially need to maintain their weight to prevent breast cancer.

Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

While breast cancer is often in the back of our minds, it’s important to know the difference between common benign conditions like fibroadenomas, fat necrosis, or cysts and breast cancer. If you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor. A doctor will adapt some diagnosing techniques to identify the same. These are:-

Physical examination

The breast exam is a routine part of one’s yearly physical checkup. The doctor checks for any lumps or discharge, which could be signs of breast cancer. They will also check for any nipple problems, such as inverted nipples.

Medical history

When you visit your doctor, they will ask questions about your health and any medications you may be taking. This is important information to know because some drugs can interact with each other and cause negative side effects. The doctor will also want to know about the medical history of immediate family members, as this can have an impact on your diagnosis.

Early detection is key to surviving breast cancer, and it’s important that you tell your doctor about any family history of the disease. If you have had a mastectomy and chemotherapy, you will need to speak with your doctor about getting screened for breast cancer.

Mammogram

A mammogram is a form of imaging in use to find breast cancer. This type of medical image uses a low-dose X-ray machine to take pictures of the inside of the breast. Doctors use these images to help distinguish between benign and malignant masses in the breast.

MRI

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and is one of the most popular forms of imaging used by doctors. MRI scans are used to help detect breast cancer. MRIs are used in conjunction with other tests such as mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and other scans.

Biopsy

This involves removing a small amount of breast tissue to be used for testing. The test results will indicate the condition.

Ultrasound

Ultrasonic sound waves are used to produce an image of breast tissue. These sound waves are emitted at different frequencies that can be reflected or absorbed by various levels of breast tissue.

Treatment for Breast Cancer

The treatments for breast cancer are as follows:

Lumpectomy

A lumpectomy is when your doctor removes the tumor while leaving your breast intact. The procedure removes just the cancerous tissue, which means that there’s less that needs to heal. It also reduces the chance of recurrence, which is why it is often recommended when cancer is detected early on.

Mastectomy

A mastectomy is the surgical removal of all breast tissue, including the tumour and connecting tissue. This doctor usually performs in one surgery or in two surgeries. The first surgery removes all breast tissue except for the nipple, while the second surgery removes the nipple and reconstructs what is left of your breast with skin taken from other parts of your body.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the most common cancer treatment, and it involves the use of anticancer drugs. These drugs interfere with cells’ ability to reproduce. Chemotherapy doctors perform intravenously and it works by causing cancer cells to die or by stopping them from dividing.

Radiation

Radiation is a form of electromagnetic energy doctors use in many different ways. The most common uses for therapeutic radiation are its use in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Radiation therapy is also called radiotherapy or RT.

Hormonal and targeted therapy

Hormones play a significant role in determining the growth of cancer cells. In some cases, hormone-based therapy is a treatment. This type of therapy doctors does through hormone-blocking pills or injections, radiation, or surgery to remove the tumor.
